After exchanging video messages throughout their Level Up Village Global Inventors course, students in Roanoke, Virginia, and their partner students in Central America connected live via Skype. And what amazing conversations they had! Here’s the story, as told by educators on both ends.
We are delighted to share that Level Up Village team member Nicki Brill has been named a NAA 2017 Next Generation of Afterschool leader, an award that highlights the contributions made by emerging professionals active in the afterschool community. Nicki was profiled in the Winter 2017 issue of NAA’s AfterSchool Today magazine and will be recognized for her achievement at the National AfterSchool Association (NAA) Conference on March 19 in Dallas, where Level Up Village will also be exhibiting.

In cooperation with Level Up Village, EduMais has introduced a new, exciting class: Global Web Designers. The class is an exchange program between EduMais and The Rumson Country Day School in New Jersey, United States. It gives eight children from EduMais and 13 children from our American partner school, aged between 10 and 12 years, the opportunity to exchange video letters and create a joint website about renewable energy.
Level Up Village is keeping environmentalism and internationalism at the forefront in the third grade. For the first time this winter, The Wilson School is participating in a program offered by Level up Village, which facilitates global science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) collaboration between students from around the world. Third grade “Global Scientists” collaborated with a class in Nicaragua, sharing project files and exchanging video letters.
For Valentine’s Day, we thought it would be fitting to highlight the love we feel for Global Education. Starting two weeks ago, we reached out to our US school partners, our Global Partner organizations in 20+ countries and globally-minded educators around the world and asked them to post a #GlobalEdSelfie to #SharetheLUV for Global Ed. Level Up Village is combining gamification with its mission to globalize the classroom in its recently introduced course: Global Gaming Strategists. In the course, students will play a game called SEED, where they will embark on an educational, dice-based adventure about protecting Earth’s natural resources. The action in SEED can be compared to adventure games, like ‘Pokémon Go!’ or ‘Dungeons & Dragons’. However, SEED’s unique gameplay systems have been built from the ground up with education in mind.
It’s a truly exciting time to be a teacher, especially now that educators are increasingly focused on implementing cross-curricular, project-based learning (PBL) in their classrooms.
Cross-curricular learning taps into the four C’s: creativity, collaboration, communication and critical thinking – the skills widely considered essential for the 21st Century learner. Moreover, the newly revised standards (CCSS, NGSS and ISTE) all require students to develop these higher level skills. Last week in the Middle School, Chapin’s Class 4 science minds explored the water issues facing our world and prepared to work towards creative solutions to solve them. With the guidance of Spanish teacher Ana Agón, the Class 4 students were paired with students in Argentina, Honduras or Nicaragua to learn about the water issues facing these countries before designing their own water-cleaning tools. These unique pairings were the result of the ongoing Science and Spanish STEAM (STEM + Arts) program that is coordinated by Level Up Village and facilitates collaboration between students from around the world.
School children all over the world are participating in Hour of Code this week, the phenomenally successful program spearheaded by Code.org. This event is a key element of Computer Science Education Week (CSEdWeek), an annual program designed to inspire interest in computer science among K-12 children worldwide.
